Look What Derek Can Do!!
Derek can ride a two-wheeler without training wheels! He hasn't been riding his bike for the past year because his mom and dad were too cheap to buy him compatible training wheels. He's been using Taylor's bike when allowed and I think he just got tired of it. I think he also realized that he's the only 6-year old on our street that couldn't ride on his own. So one day last week I asked if he wanted to try and after a couple sessions, with me holding his bike seat, he got it! The last thing he learned was starting on his own, but he's already mastered that too. He's been riding for a couple days now and he's addicted. It's all he wants to do. He told me yesterday (after crashing hard) "I know it's dangerous riding a bike and I might get hurt, but I don't care because it's so much fun". It's funny that he said that because, in the past, he was so afraid of falling that he wouldn't pedal fast enough which would cause him to tip over. It's so amazing to watch them learn new things. Way to go, Derek!
(I couldn't get one of the training wheels off, but it was raised up. Dave had to muscle it off later.)

Way to go, Derek!
(Little hint for the big crashes: bike helmet. Isn't it even a law or something? I see lots, if not all, kids wearing them these days.)
Yes, I realize that he needs a helmet and he will wear one. It's on my to-do list. Thanks for the hint. :)
I love seeing them learn new things and that look of pride when they finally master it is so wonderful. How fun!!!!
Yay for Derek, we are working on it with Adam who also is the oldest in the neighborhood not riding a bike without training wheels! He does not want to fall and is so afraid of it, so thanks for the hope of him getting over those fears!!! :)
Yes Derek!! Way to go and way to be brave knowing you might get hurt but some of those things are just worth it!! As our firefighters across the street would say. . where's the helmet? ha ha ha I'm an Aunt like Aunt Laurel I guess :) Enjoy!
WHAT A STUD! GO DEREK GO!!! :) What an exciting day to celebrate!!
Way to go DEREK! That is so great! I showed Alex the clip and he says, "good job, Derek! That is so great mom!"
Congratulations Derek! And Congrats too on making it to 2nd grade. Alyssa is officially a 2nd grader now too. And since we're congratulating, CONGRATS ON THE NEW HOUSE!!! I can't believe how long it's been since I checked your blog. A lot has happened to you guys. We're so happy for you.
Ashlyn is just learning too. Maybe they can go riding together! Come visit.
