My Brain is Turning to Mush
Okay, I'll admit it....I haven't read a book (besides children's and The Book of Mormon) in years. I have been wanting to get back into that "reading thing again", and with school and soccer starting up I have more time to kill while waiting for kids. However, I need suggestions for a good book to get my interest back. Please leave a comment with your answer to this question: If you were on your death bed and had time for just one more book...what would you read? Any suggestions? (BTW...I'm not dying.)

Well I could list Twilight but I am sure you already know all about it. So, my suggestion to you are the "Books of Bayern". They are by Shannon Hale and they are really good. The first book in the is called "The Goose Girl", then there is "Enna Burning" and then "River Secrets" and on September 19 the 4th book of the series comes out it is called "Forest Born". They are really good and she has another book called "The Princess Academy" that is really good.
Oh, sister, where to start? If you are trying to get into reading again, you will want something that you know you like. I was going to suggest Shannon Hale, as well, but if you don't like fantasy, then maybe not. (I typically don't like fantasy, but really liked Shannon Hale's books.) We'll have to talk later 'cause there are just too many to mention here. Also, you can go to Goodreads.com and find friends and see what books they've read. I have one friend that has similar reading taste as me and she has been my hook up for good books. Here's my short list:
"A Girl Named Skippy" (got me interested in writing about my childhood)
"Dandelion Wine" (Helps you savor the good memories)
"Number One Ladeies Detective Agency" - (really enjoyable series)
I would NOT suggest starting the "Twilight" series (sorry ladies) unless you really want to commit yourself to some time, and don't mind reading sap. It sounds like you want your mind sharpened, and "Twilight" actually sucks (no pun intended) intelligence from your brain, I think. It's a good read if you want to escape reality for a while, not to sharpen your mind. (Again, sorry "Twilight" lovers, just my opinion. I read all the books and enjoyed them, but they do have their place.)
Shwew! But you asked.
The best book i have ever read was The Book Theif by markus zusac, its a really really good read, and definitely a page turner.
I agree with all the other comments so far.
I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I think it is hard to read "classic" type books while on the go. I LOVE them, but the language is a bit different, and they are books I want to read when it is quiet and I can really devote some time to it. If I want something to read when I am waiting for the kids to get out of school, or in the dr office, I like to go to YA fiction. Shannon Hale is great (I am not big on fantasy, but these are great) and I really liked the Gemma Doyle Triolgy by Libba Bray. You might like "The Time Travelers Wife" by Audrey Niffeneger. It is one of my all time favorite books. Now as for the question, "If you were on your death bed and had time for just one more book...what would you read?" I would probably read something I hadn't read before, but then I can't really suggest something I haven't read, so I guess I will go with The Anne of Green Gables books. If you haven't read them you should. They are better than the mini series (and I love the mini series), easy to read, and just a great story. I have other favorites too....but we'll start there. :) (and that is like 8 books, so it is more than a start! LOL)
Natalie,
You need to connect with me on goodreads.com. I have over 500 book suggestions on there! That would give you something to read.
Thanks for the help! It sounds like Shannon Hale is pretty popular!
You have some really good suggestions here. I have loved all the suggested books. Here are my 3 suggestions and why I would read them as my LAST book.
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom: This is a fantastic book filled with life lessons from the authors life in Holland during WWII. SO UPLIFTING!
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy: This is one of my FAVORITE classic fiction books. It is relatively short, very funny and action packed. It is very different than the movie.
John Adams by David McCullough: This is one of my favorite non-fiction books. It is SO the opposite of "mind-mush." McCullough writes history like it is a good novel. I learned so much and he really reminded me how much I love history.
Hope you find something to read that you love!
I'm just like you, Natalie [E., not N.] I haven't read anything in SO long! I guess when you're a mom other priorites slip into the mix too much.
I remember two books I read in my single years that I really liked, though. I'd recommend "The Bean Trees," by Barbara Kingsolver; and "Cannery Row," by John Steinbeck. Those are probably my two most favorite books. But then again, I don't get out much. Odd for an English major, don't you think?
Wow! I love this post because I'm always looking for something good to read, too! I'm gonna check out some that I haven't read...the ones Stephanie suggested. I have read "Goose Girl"...good book. And "Book Theif"...good, but a little sad. Have you read "These is my Words"? Good, too! Anyway... Good luck! I'm checkin' out this goodreads.com place for sure!
